Only a quarter of drivers learn with a qualified driving instructor in Liverpool NSW.

MOST brand new Liverpool drivers predominantly learn how to drive with a relative - and much more learn with a friend than with a fully qualified driving instructor.

The figures come from a new survey conducted by the Yellow pages, which polled 2,178 drivers who had passed their test in the previous couple of decades.

Respondents were asked who they took the vast majority of driving classes with: 46 percent of them stated that a relative had taught thema further 28% said that a friend was their primary tutor; while only 26% stated that a qualified driving instructor was responsible for their own lessons.

Roads & Maritime Services (RMS), the body responsible for overseeing driver testing and training, says that, normally, learners have around 45 hours of expert education and 22 hours of personal practice prior to passing the practical driving test.

Sydney South Driving School managing director said:"When you realise people who turn to their loved ones and friends can save as much money, it's really a wonder that more people are not just using teachers to get a few lessons before taking their evaluation.

"That saving of over $600 could go towards the expense of a first vehicle, an insurance policy or even treating yourself and people who've helped you pass your test."

"This may foster the idea that it is a fantastic idea to decrease the costs of learning to drive because so many other individuals are already doing this.

"According to the most recent Roads & Maritime Services (RMS) analysis, the statistics for people killed and seriously injured on the streets are up again, with recently qualified drivers being over-represented.

However, that opinion drew criticism from the Driving Instructors Association, Australia's largest professional association for driver trainers. The chief executive, said that the comments were irresponsible.

"One of the reasons might well be poor driver training - people short-cutting on learning how to drive by using unqualified, inexperienced and inexpert friends and family to'teach' them to save money.

"What they save not learning to drive correctly, they cover in terms of repair and accident costs, vehicle maintenance, insurance costs or, regrettably, injury or loss of life."
